A rose to developers of the Village of Ponderosa in West Des Moines for planning a community with the pedestrian in mind. Ladco Development Inc. calls the 511-unit residential-retail project on 97 acres a "community inside a community" because residents will be able to walk less than 1,000 feet to work or shops. Said to be all the rage on the coasts, this was the standard when Iowa towns were built. It's good to see new developments that don't rely just on driving. Maybe residents can walk to the fitness center.
